I didn't start this list until the end of May so I'm certain I missed several items. In essence this is a list of all the books, comics, movies, TV shows, and (if applicable) video games, I watched, read, or played in the past month. This post is not meant to be an in-depth discussion, but rather an overview so you can get an idea of what I'm reading/watching. Also I list a favorite and least favorite of the month for each type of media and discuss a little bit as to why. If there is anything you want to talk about or need a recommendation on, just ask in the comments! Links are included as appropriate.
Books:
Note: Book titles link to Amazon, but you should buy books through your local, independent bookstore. (Shout out, Alamosa Books!)
- Redshirts by John Scalzi
- The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson
- The Near Witch by Victoria Scwab
- Legion by Brandon Sanderson
- The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson
- Across the Universe by Beth Revis
- A Million Suns by Beth Revis
- Shades of Earth by Beth Revis
Favorite: Really all of these books were fantastic. But if I had to pick one, the one book I recommended to the most people after reading last month was Redshirts. While Brandon Sanderson is my favorite living author and I immensely enjoyed all three of his books I read, Redshirts was completely unlike anything I've ever read. Redshirts is a book that is basically about the tertiary characters on a ship like the Enterprise in Star Trek. It's a book intended to be meta but it's incredibly fun, not laborious. It's a quick read and if you're a Star Trek fan at all, I highly recommend it.
Least Favorite: I've got nothing. They were all great.
Comics:
Note: Comic titles link to Amazon, but I read most of them through ComiXology.
- Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale
- Captain Marvel #1-6
- Avengers Assemble #1-8
- Ultimate Spider-Man, from The New World According to Peter Parker through The Death of Spider-Man
- Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1-18 (i.e. the Miles Morales Spider-Man)
- Aquaman #1 - 6 (New 52)
- Comic titles, I read on a monthly basis: Young Avengers, Batgirl, Secret Avengers, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Hawkeye.
Favorite: This one is going to go to Ultimate Spider-Man. I really enjoyed the second volume of this title. I absolutely adored the whole "Aunt May's House for Wayward Superhero Teens" thing (seriously, it's like Peter had his own adorable, teenage Avengers shack). And the Death of Spider-Man was heart wrenching, as it should have been.
Least Favorite : I'm going to give this to Avengers Assemble. I had high hopes for this one, but overall it was basically just "meh". I didn't feel like it was a waste of my time, but neither would I recommend it to anyone.
Movies:
Note: Movies were included regardless of whether they are new or not. They just had to be new to me. So if I caught a movie for the first time on TV, it was included on the list!. Movie links are to imdb.
Favorite of the Month: I'm going to have to give this to The Great Gatsby. The movie was beautiful and moving. I thought it was a great interpretation of the book. For more on how I felt about this movie, check out After Trivially Crucial 001.
Least Favorite: This honor easily goes to Star Trek Into Darkness. Check out this post on why.
TV Shows:
Note: These are the shows I'm currently watching, whether it be new episodes that are on right now or old shows I'm catching up on. Links are to imdb.
- Merlin , Season 5
- Defiance , Season 1
- Doctor Who , Season 7
- How I Met Your Mother, Season 8
- Smallville, Season 4
- Grimm, Season 2
- New Girl, Season 2
- Warehouse 13, Season 4
- Arrow, Season 1
Favorite: I'm going to give this one to Arrow, for exceeding my expectations and coming through with a strong first season. Honestly, I didn't have a lot of hope for this show after the first handful of episodes, but the second half of the season delivered some of the most intense television I've seen in a long time. And the finale was fantastic.
Least Favorite: Doctor Who was consistently a disappointment. Which is tragic. I live in hope that Doctor Who will become great again.
